Sin is one of the core background teachings resonating throughout the ages in the Bible. Sin pointed to humanity’s fall and the unfortunate breakaway from his creator. The question of sin was never over despite the pronouncement of God’s judgment that followed in Genesis. However, there was the plan and the processes of God in bringing man back unto Himself through the Salvation of Jesus Christ.
While the Bible taught explicitly about a sin that entered the world from the action taken by Adam and Eve in the Garden. It unmasks sins and consequences, while at the same time situating the mercies of God and forgiveness over the flaws of man. Since sins have consequences as justice, and in another way there appears to be forgiveness for genuine repentance. The grace and justice of God raised an important question. Are some sins worse than others?
Some Christians might have wondered at the headline of this article by questioning in their heart, does the Bible say anything about ‘7 deadly sins’? Or are there ‘seven’ unforgivable sins? The point is clear. There is no list of sins in order of their grievousness in the Bible. Instead, Jesus was specific about one sin that he described as unforgivable. He declared it as “The blasphemy against the Holy Ghost.”
This article seeks to explore seven sins that come with greater consequences mentioned in the Bible. Why are these sins repeatedly mentioned? What spiritual implications do the sins have? Through the same lens, the sin Jesus mentioned- what exactly it is.
Does The Bible Rank Sin More Serious Than the Others?
The Bible teaches that all sins separate humanity from God. Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.” Apostle Paul taught in Romans that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that the wages of sin are death.

A judge once said, “I can not give the same judgment to a man who stole money and to another man who raped and killed. The nature of their sins is different. - The Sin of Pride:
Pride is like an open gate to other sins. It is the exaltation of self, either in knowledge, wisdom, or riches. The cost of pride is downfall. The price paid for pride is disobedience. Proverbs 16:18. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Satan was created with all the precious things ever; the iniquity that was found in him was pride. He imagined iniquity in his heart to compete with God.
The sin of pride led man to disobey God. Meaning, the one with pride came to Eve and told him he could be like God if he disobeyed. She did, and today, humanity is feeling the consequences.
Many kings were found to have disobeyed God in the Bible. These could be traced to disobedience. Satan’s disobedience. It made man refuse correction, look down on others, and trust in oneself. The opposite of that sin that brought man out of everlasting destruction is the humility of Jesus Christ.
.2. Idolatry and Isolating Self From God:
God hates idolatry. Idolatry pushes men against God. God hates it when man imagines and imagines that there is someone else besides Him. Lev 19:4. In the Old Testament, an idol was crafted like an image worshipped. Today, an idol is the best thing considered above God. Idolatry pushes God outside of man’s heart.
A Christian must ask consistently, what idol is he holding in his heart, pulling his relationship apart from God? A healthy Christian life asks questions daily and is conscious of the spiritual state of his being.
3. Immorality of the Flesh
What forms the basis of immorality of the flesh is unbiblical sex. Sex is intimacy designed by God to be fulfilled in marriage. When it is being carried out outside of the designed plan. Then, it becomes a sin. Such sins are adultery, fornication, pornography, masturbation, etc. The Bible does not state masturbation or pornography as sins. Yet, it was never silent either. Paul declared that, “Flee from sexual immorality”. That captures sins of all kinds found in sex.
Sexual immorality damages the body. It affects relational behaviors, emotions, and minds. The Bible teaches Christians to run from it.
4. Love Of Money: Greed
. 1 Tim 6:10, it states that the love of money is the root of all evil. When a heart abides in the love of money, such a heart is willing to do anything for it, even though such means may seem to be unaligned with the will of God. The highest state of love of money appears to be greediness. Reaching this level promotes fraud, dishonesty, waywardness, corruption, and lack of compassion.
Jesus Christ taught that money should not enslave. It should not be a property preferred to the course of the journey of eternity. Material possessions are good. They must be looked at from the angle of dependency on God. The pursuit must not overshadow and possess the heart.
5. Unforgiving Spirit:
The teaching of Jesus Christ about the kingdom of God anchored forgiveness. A heart that does not forgive can not, in the same vein, receive the forgiveness of God. Matt 22:37-39. When love exists, hatred will not survive. And this ground provides a link to forgive those who offend you.
Paul taught Christians the subject of forgiveness and prioritized a heart of reconciliation, as Jesus Christ did for humanity. Eph 4:31- 32.
Forgiveness does not practically mean you are not offended, or you should pretend not to be hurt. It is just a state of letting go and releasing such an individual to the care of God for proper handling.
6. The Crime of Killing:
The crime of murder came into being when Cain slew Abel. It has consequences. No man should take the life of another. The power of life and death is not in the hand of a man. Except for a state execution of a criminal offence. That right is biblically defined. “For he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.”
Gen 9:6. No man should shed another man’s blood. For man is made in the image of God.
Matthew 26:52, “Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”
7. Rejecting God Continually: Unbelief and Blaspheming The Holy Spirit Perpetually
. John 1:11, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” Rejecting God continually is the most grievous sin of all sins. The root of all sins came from falling to the side of Satan. Deception. The route out of the fall is admitting the truth of God.
God has consistently called his people out of sin. He wants nothing but a willing heart to believe on Him.
Persistent unbelief makes a waste of the provision of God for sin. “Today, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart.” Do not harden your heart. A step of faith is what God demands.
The truth is not about examining them intellectually. It is a matter of the heart. God is not creating tension or struggles. Wrestling with questions. Those instances can harm the state of submission of the heart.
The One Sin Jesus Called Unforgivable
After we examined some grievous sins, about seven (7) of them in this article. There is this important question. What is the sin Jesus said it will not be forgiven?
Matt 12:31-32 and Luke 12:10. Do you know that most Christians have ignorantly claimed they have committed this sin? Some said that a Christian has committed blasphemy against the Holy Spirit when they criticize the church pastor or speak against authority.

The context was that Jesus Christ healed a man, and some people rejected it and blasphemed him by saying he operated by the power of the devil. The deliberate denial came from a heart that does not accept the truths of the Holy Spirit despite knowing them to be consistent and worthy to be acknowledged.
The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit becomes an unforgivable sin when a man dies without retracting and repenting to Jesus while he lives on earth. This is the time when the mercy of God can no longer prevail on such. Hebrews 2:3. “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him]”

Christians should never fear the subject matter of sins or having a mindset of living a self-righteous life. Rather, this exposition should serve as a means of checking whether they are living wholly for the Lord.
Christians should guard their heart by keeping in the Scriptures at all times. Remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s conviction and study the scriptures daily. God is not expecting us to take the whole work on us. He just wants us to be submissive. Obedient. Guided by meditation on his words.
