At no point in time did Satan ‘attempt’ to overthrow the Lord God because that is far from possible; neither was there a time when he led some armies of rebel angels to overthrow God in heaven and was, as a result, cast down to the earth. That Satan was even in heaven and then cast down to the earth is not vividly certain in Scripture.
The Book of Revelation 12:7-8, which talks about Satan and his cohorts being cast out of heaven by the angel Michael and his allies, is about future matters, not a reference to the genesis and/or the origin of things. The Book of Revelation is not about the origin of things or any creation story; it is about things which are (present) and hereafter (future). See Revelation 1:19.
Satan was sanctioned by the Most High as a result of his prideful ambitions, containing the “Five I Wills” and his “extremum consilium”, as well as his “ultima ratio”, were, “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds and be like the Most High.”
It was not that he had actualized these things. The Scripture says he only said these things in his heart, and Elohim, that powerful Being who can tell the thoughts of all His creations, had Satan sanctioned.
Isaiah 14:13 (KJV) “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north…”
The five things which Satan said in his heart became an “iniquity” comprised to God. Ezekiel 28:15 (KJV) “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”
The Prophet Ezekiel made us understand that this iniquity was caused as a result of Satan’s mono-perfection or his state of exclusive flawlessness, which became the source of his arrogance.
Ezekiel 28:17 (KJV) “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
As for now, I have no mind to digress at all. I would like to suspend Ezekiel 28 till another time while I focus on Isaiah 14, which I quoted earlier.
The “Five Wills” in Isaiah 14 were actually made by Satan, so I’d like to call them the Five Wills of Satan. Yet, the context of the chapter seems to point to a human king. However, the languages being used seem to point to the fact that the author had a supernatural being at heart. The author was thus making concurrent addresses. In other words, the author was addressing two cases at a go here.
There are quite a few reasons to accept that Isaiah 14 was about Satan. First, the reference to the name Lucifer (in Isaiah 14:12). But I would not dwell much on that because some people have had controversies surrounding that name.
But we discovered that Satan’s ultimate ambition (being like God) was the same format he used for our first parents (Eve). He told the first mother of mankind that God knows that the very day they took from the forbidden tree, they shall be as “gods.” Man, in the quest to become a God, deliberately ate the forbidden fruit. I carefully observe in Genesis 3:6-7 that the eyes of Eve were not yet opened until Adam had his own share of the fruit and ate. Man ate that fruit on purpose. That purpose made him blameworthy. The lady of all human beings must have told her husband every piece of information she had received from Satan, and Adam must have preferred to believe Satan’s lies over God’s truth. Adam ate that fruit on purpose.
Furthermore, Isaiah 14 points to the millennium reign of Jesus Christ. The Bible says the earth would be at rest (peace) and quiet when that prideful king has been hurled down to the bottomless pit.
Isaiah 14:7 (KJV) “The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.”
There is no way the earth can be at rest as long as Satan roams about it (Job 1:7). The Bible objectively tells us that Satan walks to and fro on the earth seeking whom to devour (1 Peter 5:8). That means Satan is the cause of every chaos. There is no way the whole world will be at rest, quiet, and break forth into singing as long as Satan is present. The Book of Revelation 20:1-6 tells us that Satan must be bound and imprisoned for there to be a worldwide peace.
Revelation 20:1-3 (KJV) “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”
This description perfectly fits Isaiah 14:15, which says, “Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”
We then understand that Isaiah 14:15 shall be actualized by an angel. That angel which would bind Satan with chains, cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut it up must have been an exceedingly powerful angel, stronger and more dreadful than Satan.
The Prophet Isaiah then had a glimpse of Satan’s state inside that bottomless pit. The very people who could not make it to heaven, the very people who were Satan’s agents, as well as the very kings whose hearts were used by Satan to actualize his plans, would be surprised to see Satan’s fate.
Isaiah 14:16-17 (KJV) “They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?”
God’s word says that God hates pride. He resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
